Laughlin Air Force Base is a facility located close to the border of Mexico. The base shares a border with Del Rio Texas and is the largest pilot training base in the United States Air Force. Laughlin Air Force Base is home to the 47th Flying Training wing which is under the command of the Air Education and Training Command. Upon arrival at Laughlin by car, the main gate is located along Highway 90. The gate is open 24 hours a day and is about a two and a half hour drive from San Antonio. Schools near Laughlin Air Force Base are located off post in the Del Rio/Laughlin school district. If living on post, children will attend the Ruben Chavira Elementary which K-8. Del Rio High School accommodates grades 10-12. Continuing education and counseling services are provided by the Air Force voluntary education services program. Information regarding degree programs, financial aid, technical training and colleges and universities can be accessed through the program. Tuition assistance funds are also available for active duty Air Force personnel. Several private schools and gifted student programs are also offered in the school districts.
There are two dormitories available at Laughlin Air Force Base for unaccompanied personnel. Most dorm rooms contain a living room, bathroom and bedroom with air conditioning. Common kitchens are shared at different locations. Airmen who are grade E-4 with less than three years of service are usually required to live on base. Two-bedroom duplexes are also available. On- and off-post housing is handled by the privatized housing office which manages homes for sale and rent in the outlying communities. Housing admission applications are required, and the housing office will be able to tell military personnel about basic housing allowances offered for off-post residences. If a waiting list exists, candidates will be placed according to rank and family size. Laughlin still serves as the premiere training facility for pilots and graduates over 25 pilots per year from training on such as aircraft as the T-6A, Texan II, the T-38 C and the T-1A Jayhawk.
